Call:  Transitions

The Seabury – Western Art Gallery is accepting submissions of original fine art for mid-May-June-July 2008 show showcasing personal and communal transitions. Transitions engender growth and change. They challenge our assumptions about relationships, values and priorities. Some transitions occur within a religious or spiritual framework, some in a cultural context, while others happen in isolation. The artist should consider how transitions provide courage for the future and help celebrate the past. Themes may include but not limited to: journey, community, empowerment, struggle, liberation.

Artists may submit up to 10 slides or 300 dpi. jpgs and should include a list of slide or file descriptions with title of artwork, dimensions, date, format and price. Artists should also include a biography and artist statement.

Located on the North Shore of Chicago in the diverse and dynamic city of Evanston, Seabury-Western Theological Seminary is itself in the midst of a transition to offer more forward-looking theological education in a rapidly changing context. As it reinvents itself it seeks to partner with visual artists who can offer challenge and encouragement for transition through their work.

Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2008. There is a $15 entry fee. Submissions will be accepted through snail mail only and must include a SASE if you would like items returned. No e-mail submissions will be considered.

Upon acceptance, the gallery will negotiate delivery/pickup with the artist. Mail to: Seabury-Western Theological Seminary ATTN: Arts Coordinator, 2122 Sheridan Rd., Evanston, IL. 60201. For more information contact: Tyrone Fowlkes at 847.328.9300 or email: tyrone.fowlkes@seabury.edu.

Call: Portraits of the Self

The self-portrait is a deeply traditional art subject. Artists have created images of themselves since ancient times, resulting in an art form that spans all eras and encompasses all types of media. Self-portraiture not only gives the artist a ready subject, but also one with which the artist may be less objective. The resulting self-portraits often reveal the passion, courage, and energy of the artist's soul.

How do you see yourself? How do you present yourself to others? Does your image reveal your personality, character, and values, or do these attributes hide behind an invisible veil that reflects mystery?

We invite you to use your art for self-exploration and to share an image of what you discover about your own unique physical, emotional, and spiritual persona.

Exhibition Dates: April 4 through September 30, 2008
Submissions deadline: March 21, 2008
Curator: David C. Hancock

Saints & Family on Episcopal Church Web Site

ECVA and the Episcopal Church have collaborated to create a gallery of artwork titled "Saints & Family"  introduced on the Episcopal Church web site homepage.

Bowie Snodgrass, Web Content Editor at the Episcopal Church Center, summarizes the purpose of the exhibition in an Episcopal Life Online article by Jerry Hames titled New art gallery, 'Saints & Family,' launched on Episcopal Church web site.  She said "The artists' subjects call us to listen to the wisdom of generations, inspire us to find Christ in our own lives and transcend time, inviting us into a spiritual encounter." Describing the goal of providing visual images  appealing to first-time visitors to the church's web site,  Snodgrass said "We hope visitors will be moved by the images in some small way and that they will resonate with their religious past."

Brie Dodson, ECVA Director of Communications, points out in the ELO article that "Saints & Family" is important to ECVA members because it continues the collaboration between ECVA and the church's Office of Communication.  Such collaboration provides a significant opportunity for ECVA to engage in its mission of encouraging visual arts in the the church.
